The story

Dallas's official architectural answer to the assassination — designed by one of America's great modernists.

One block east of Dealey Plaza, Philip Johnson's 1970 Kennedy Memorial is a stark white concrete cenotaph — an empty tomb — open to the sky. A low granite marker inside simply reads John Fitzgerald Kennedy. After the noise of Elm Street, this is where the city chose solemnity.
